My fellow students and I organized a River Clean-Up in order to expose a local need in a positive way. We invited some surrounding people with the incentive of free hot chocolate and popcorn which allowed us to interact with the one's closest to the area being affected. We then went about a section of the Saint Joseph river, separating recyclables from trash and removing them accordingly. After about 2 hours we had filled a fairly large dumpster full of recyclables and had a large number of trash disposables. This served our purpose of drawing attention to the issue of harmful litter plaguing our river system. It also paved the way for a local group to come together and continue planned river cleanups that are still going on to this day.
We developed a simple powerpoint presentation that outlined our experience then shared it with some of our peers as well as members of the IU South Bend faculty.
